Jessica Des Lauriers and Gary Weitzman took 323 animals from their safe loving surroundings and unethically, irresponsibly and unsafely stacked them 7-8 carriers high in a moving van then proceeded to send them on a long stressful ride ending up to 18.5 hours – the ride to their suffering and death. They called this ride – Fear Free.
Jessica Des Lauriers and Gary Weitzman failed to vet the “rescue” the animals were sent to and they ended up with Colten Jones/The Fertile Turtle, python breeder and seller of small pets for live and frozen feeders.
Des Lauriers gave permission and witnessed 323 animals go on their death ride instead of going into the HSSA Shelter; then blatantly lied to the volunteers, public and the news. Even after public concerns, SDHS took no action and continued to reassure the public the animals were safe while spewing the lies of CEO Steve Farley, See their website update on Aug. 30, 2023.
CEO Steve Farley blatantly and continuously lied to the public about where the animals were send while fabricating reasons why he could and would not release the “rescue’s” name. COO Christian Gonzalez cold heartedly and despicably planned the transport with COO Jessica Des Lauriers full well knowing the animals were going to a reptile breeder and to their suffering and death. Gonzalez also lied to the public, the news and walks free from animal cruelty charges and theft.
Despite public concerns, there was never a demand or attempt to get the animals back or to safety by either shelter and thereafter – nothing but broken promises of ” We are pursuing and looking into”.. Shamefully, there were no legal complaints of theft or animal cruelty for COO Christian Gonzalez or CEO Steve Farley who were directly responsible.
Aug 26, 2023 – HSSA posted an update on Facebook stating they accepted a number of pocket pets into their care and all were available for adoption. Truth is: The animals never went into the HSSA shelter and the photos were rabbits previously posted for adoption on the HSSA website.
